How does the laser work to remove pigmented lesions?
The laser delivers light in very short, high intensity pulses which pass through the skin. The rapid absorption of light causes the pigment molecule to destruct. The pigment molecule is then removed by the body’s natural filtering system.
What can I expect during treatment?
The treatment causes immediate darkening of the pigmented area followed by mild crusting which may last 5 to 10 days. For the majority of lesions only one treatment is required, however, depending on the size, colour, and depth more than one treatment may be required. A burning sensation will be felt at the time of treatment and for 1 to 3 hours afterwards the spots may feel slightly tender.
How do I take care of it at home?
All activities are permitted, including showering and bathing. An antibiotic ointment may be applied on the crusted lesions. The lesions should be allowed to fall off without scrubbing or picking. New skin will be revealed after the lesions fall off. Sunscreen should be worn at all times to prevent further sun/age spots from occurring.
      What are the side effects?
Persistent or permanent pigmentation changes can occur with either lightening or darkening the skin, although these side effects are rare. There is also a remote risk of scarring, infection and textural changes.
